Activities & Excursions in Nosy Mitsio

What to do in the archipelago?

Amidst unspoilt reefs and deserted coves, every day becomes a new adventure crafted by nature, far from it all.

Diving and Snorkelling

Diving at Mitsio means treating yourself to the privilege of less-explored coral reefs.

Far from the crowded areas, the snorkelling spots reveal a dazzling array of marine life: hawksbill turtles, leopard rays and a myriad of tropical fish swimming in crystal-clear water, where every stroke of your fins brings a new discovery. The seabed here has retained a rare level of integrity: pristine coral gardens, vertiginous drop-offs and channels bustling with nutrient-rich currents.

Beneath the surface, the spectacle is constant. Hawksbill turtles gliding amongst the sea fans, schools of trevally swirling in the blue, leopard rays gliding over the white sand, and for the luckiest visitors, a fleeting encounter with a shark.

Snorkelling from the archipelago’s white sandy beaches offers experiences accessible to everyone, even the youngest visitors.

Required level: from beginner to advanced, depending on the site.
Best time of year: April to November for maximum visibility.

Walking Trails

La Grande Mitsio can also be explored on foot. The trails winding through the endemic vegetation lead to spectacular viewpoints over the archipelago, and in particular over the famous basalt columns, whose monumental scale is fully revealed from the island’s heights.
The flora is a companion in its own right: pachypodiums with sculpted silhouettes, satrana palms, and bottle trees with their unlikely shapes. For naturalists, every step is a discovery. Wear closed-toe shoes as the volcanic terrain is uneven and the slopes can be steep in places.
Difficulty: moderate.
Duration: from 1 hour to half a day, depending on the route.
Ideal for: naturalists, photographers, hikers.

Marvel at a spectacular geological site.

Sea Turtles

Wildlife and Flora Observation

The archipelago is home to a wealth of terrestrial and marine biodiversity that continues to astonish scientists: endemic species of reptiles and birds, plants found nowhere else on the planet, and coral reefs in exceptional health.
Watching sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the archipelago’s secluded beaches is an experience that leaves a lasting impression. Night-time excursions also offer the chance to observe shy species that remain hidden during the day. For nature photographers, Nosy Mitsio is quite simply a unique opportunity.
Best time to visit: all year round, with specific periods depending on the species.
Ideal for: nature lovers, photographers, families.

Birdwatching: Heading for the “Quatre Frères”

Set sail on a tranquil boat trip around the Quatre Frères islets. These towering rock formations are the setting for a constant aerial ballet. Get a close-up view of the colonies of frigatebirds, brown boobies and the majestic Ankoay (Madagascar fish eagle). An experience for nature photographers and birdwatching enthusiasts.

Inter-island Excursions

The Nosy Mitsio archipelago comprises around fifteen islands and islets, each with its own unique character. Tsarabanjina and its pristine white sandy beaches. The Four Brothers. Uninhabited islets where you can moor your boat and spend the day with the world to yourself.
Inter-island excursions are undertaken by traditional boat or zodiac, depending on the distances and sea conditions. Each trip is an expedition in its own right, with its own share of surprises: dolphins swimming alongside the bow, schools of flying fish, migrating seabirds…
Duration: half-day to full day.
Ideal for: all types of traveller.

Encounters and Culture: Life in the Fishing Villages

The adventure is also about the people. Visit the traditional villages of Grande Mitsio to discover the way of life of the Antakarana fishermen. Combining the sharing of ancestral skills with respect for the ‘Fady’ (local taboos), this cultural stopover is a lesson in humility and joy, set to the rhythm of the outrigger canoes.

Sailing and Catamaran Cruises: The Luxury of Freedom

Setting sail on a private catamaran or sailing yacht cruise from Nosy Be means treating yourself to the absolute exclusivity of a floating hotel in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Far from the constraints of fixed timetables, let the wind guide your itinerary between overnight moorings in deserted bays and contemplative mornings gazing at the Basalt Organs. Whether you’re a fan of pure sailing or the steady comfort of a lagoon, experiencing the archipelago from the deck of a vessel is the only way to blur the boundary between land and sea. A wild immersion where luxury lies not in pomp and ceremony, but in the silence of a starry night, alone in the world, in the middle of nowhere.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding

Paddle along the coast of Grande Mitsio at sunrise, gliding silently to a beach where you might be the only ones to set foot that day. Kayaking is undoubtedly the most intimate way to explore the archipelago. At your own pace, you’ll discover spots inaccessible to motorised boats: hidden coves, rock arches and mangroves where herons nest.
Stand-up paddleboarding, meanwhile, offers a unique perspective on the crystal-clear, shallow waters of the lagoons, with the chance to spot turtles and stingrays right beneath your feet.
Level required: none, suitable for everyone.
Ideal for: families, couples, nature lovers.

Sport Fishing

The deep waters surrounding the Nosy Mitsio archipelago are home to marlins, sailfish and barracuda – species that sport fishermen from all over the world come here to catch.
Trips are organised by boat from the islands of the archipelago, using trolling or popping techniques depending on the target species. The catch-and-release philosophy is encouraged to preserve fish stocks that are still healthy. This is a responsibility that enthusiasts of sustainable fishing will appreciate.
Best time of year: November to March for large pelagic species.
Ideal for: sport fishermen, adventurers.
